Gordon Artifact ID Day, August 16th

August 16 – 11-3 pm at the Old Depot building in Gordon (Wilkinson Co.).

Thanks to the Wilkinson County Historical Society for helping to set this up!

On Aug. 16th, OAS members David Mincey, Dr. Bob Cramer, and Stephen Hammack went to Gordon, to assist the Wilkinson County Historical Society (at their wonderful Old Depot Museum) with a great day of history and fun.  It was no surprise that in this kaolin town lots of fossils were brought in, including an intriguing claw-like object that may date to the Pleistocene Era (see attached photos).  So far it is a mystery object, having stumped everyone, so please let me know if you have an idea what it can be.  We also recorded 3 Dalton points for the GA Paleoindian Recordation Project, and saw a ton of Early and Late Archaic material.  For a small town like Gordon, we were all very impressed by the large turnout of about 50 who brought artifacts to be identified (see more attached photos).
