On the Ocmulgee

The Barge

Hawkinsville, Ga.

The marine archaeology division of OAS is currently investigating a barge located in the Ocmulgee River near Hawkinsville, Ga.  Historical records indicate that the average barge on the Ocmulgee when it was navigable was 40ft long.  However, the Ocmulgee Barge is more than twice that length at 90ft.  We hope to date and identify it with this investigation.
